Tennis: Juniors serving up a treat

“However, the youngsters have been great. There’s been no trouble with line calls or with the officials, which is nice to see.

“Many of the youngsters have been involved in various age groups to gain vital match experience and it’s another game of tennis for them, which is the main thing.”

Tony Berkson from the Wirral was watching his son from the Prenton Tennis Club take part. He said: “It’s the first tournament we have been to here and the facilities are great. The youngsters here at the competition are so into their tennis.”

Eugene Fulchini was supporting his daughter in the Under 16 category and she has attended the event from Under 12 onwards.

“There is so much stress put on children and parents. It’s due to the lack of funding available for some players and the travelling they have to do,” he said.

“The level of competition has got so much more serious now and the only way that youngsters can improve is by matchplay and to just keep on doing what they love.”
