Cycling: Buckingham’s closing in on top category

Ben Kellet (Holme Valley Wheelers) was second Junior home in 23rd place. Other local finishers were Paul Smith (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) in 29th, Mark Saxton (Huddersfield RC) in 31st and Andrew Marshall (VS Cycles ) in 34th.

Ivan Boyes (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) and Gareth Evans (VS Cycles) made the trip to Pickburn for the Doncaster Wheelers Summer Road race.

Twenty two laps of a hilly 1.8-mile circuit for 2nd, 3rd & 4th Cat riders was always going to make for a tough race and the rain storm which hit the riders at about half distance didn’t help matters.

The race was won by Martin Wheeldon from the promoting club from a six-strong breakaway group, another five riders escaped on the last lap which didn’t give the bunch, including Evans and Boyes, any points to sprint for.

First Under 10 rider in the Paul Milnes Summer Cyclo Cross event at Brigshaw School, Kippax was Tom Whitworth (Huddersfield RC), while Amira Mellor (Holme Valley Wheelers) was second in the Under 12 category.

The Senior race was dominated by Mark Thwaites (Team Assos) with Andy Whitworth (Huddersfield RC) first local rider in 19th place. Giles Bailey and Graham Piccavey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) were 29th and 31st and Dave Senior (Huddersfield RC) finished in 53rd.

The next Summer Cyclo Cross will be at Brooksbank School, Elland, next Wednesday, July 15.
