Pete Barrow: So they play football at the Giants ground too?!?

HUDDERSFIELD Town fans I am afraid that I have to reveal to you that you are no longer regarded as the biggest team in our community.

That is if the reaction of BBC presenter Clare Balding is anything to go by.

On Saturday morning, prior to the FA Cup’s most romantic of weekend’s – the third round clash of the mighty and the minnows – Five Live were getting the build up to the games to bubbling point.

Fans of those clubs seeking a giant-killing were encouraged to ring in and explain why their favourites were about to topple a team from a higher division.

Balding, renown for her love of all things rugby league, had seemingly slotted into some kind of mantra as she asked those lucky enough to get airtime about their ‘little’ club.

A Town fan, sadly I did not catch the name, came on to extol the virtues of manager Lee Clark’s in-form outfit and point out that they had an unblemished home record this term going into the game and that the Baggies followers expecting an easy West Brom win would have to think again.

‘So what is your home ground like?’ asked Balding, obviously expecting some platitudes about what a homely little place Huddersfield Town’s ground is.

Full marks to the Town fan who, after a second or two of silent bafflement, responded: “Well you should know Clare, you’ve been to the ground often enough!”

You could almost hear the cogs whirring as she tried to place the ground and – if embarrassment could ever be audible – the following fluff over her lines suggested that she had twigged that they also play soccer on what she clearly regards as the home of Huddersfield Giants.

Now who would ever have thought that could happen.

Accusations of cheating were flying freely at Newlands after the Proteas perceived England bowlers Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad had been cheating in the third Test in Cape Town.
