Table Tennis: Tim Dyson ‘unbeatable’ for Brooks A
Jan 28 2010 by David Lockwood, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
TIM DYSON was the unbeatable ‘rock’ as Brooks A team charged into the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Table Tennis Clubs’ play-off Championships.
Huddersfield’s top-rated side were 1-0 down after the opening set against Doncaster St Mary’s, Phil Schofield going down in three games to the speedy Steve Morris.
But then Dyson stepped up to steady the ship with a comprehensive win over Dave Hepp 3-0, and from that point on it was virtually all-Brooks as Russell Senior, Dyson and Schofield all beat county player Steve Whathey, running up five successive sets to rock the visitors to their Milnsbridge Scout HQ.
Schofield also lost to Hepp, while Senior too slipped against Hepp, but the Brooks man hit back with countless forehand and backhand smashes past a mesmerised Morris in an epic match.
Dyson remained cool, calm and collected all night, however, winning everything put in front of him, including the doubles match with Senior against Morris and Hepp to conclude an excellent 7-3 victory and line themselves up with a semi-final meeting against Hull YPI on Humberside next month.
Brooks A 7 Doncaster St Marys 3 – Phil Schofield lost to Steve Morris 4-11, 8-11, 6-11; Tim Dyson bt Dave Hepp 11-6, 11-6, 11-4; Russell Senior bt Steve Whathey 10-12, 11-0, 11-7, 11-2; Dyson bt Morris 11-5, 11-4, 11-7; Schofield bt Wathey 12-10, 11-6, 11-5; Senior lost to Hepp 8-11, 8-11, 7-11; Dyson bt Whathey 11-6, 11-8, 11-9; Senior bt Morris 6-11, 11-5, 11-9, 12-10; Schofield lost to Hepp 10-12, 7-11, 11-4, 8-11.
