LOCAL champion Ellen Whitaker has won another top award.
Ellen’s superb victory on Ocolado at the British Open Show Jumping Championships has been voted Performance of the Month for April.
The fourteen year-old chestnut gelding, owned by Dawn Makin and Ellen’s father Steven, kept the crowds on the edge of their seats to snatch victory on the final day of the British Open Show Jumping Championships held at the NEC in Birmingham.
The new Performance of the Month Award is an amalgamation of the former Showjumper and Owner of the Month Awards.
It recognises the achievements of not just British riders, but British horses and owners too.
Clare Whittaker, Chairman of Performance Development at British Showjumping, said: “We are delighted to announce the amalgamation of the Show Jumper and Owner of the Month Awards, into one monthly award, Performance of the Month.
“The new award will not only recognise the fantastic achievements of our riders, but also our horses and their owners, without which none of it would be possible.
“It gives me great pleasure to award the April Performance of the Month to Ocolado, Dawn Makin, Ellen Whitaker and her father Steven, for their incredible win at the British Open.
“My congratulations go to them and their hard working team.”
Patrick Riley, of Zamar TTT, sponsors of the Performance Award, said: “This year’s British Open was a hard-fought competition resulting in a superb performance from a very talented young lady.”
Meanwhile, another member of the Whitaker dynasty is in action this month.
World Class Showjumping Performance Manager Rob Hoekstra has selected Michael Whitaker in his squad that will represent Great Britain at the opening leg of the 2010 Meydan FEI Nations Cup, taking place in La Baule, France, from May 13 to 16.
Michael will partner Beatrice Mertens’ 10-year-old dark bay gelding, GIG Amai. This combination was Britain’s sole representative at this year’s World Cup Final held in Geneva last month.
