MIRFIELD tennis club were hosts of the 2011 Slazenger Huddersfield and District Junior tournament which attracted the highest entry to date with players from Huddersfield LTC, Thornhill, Rastrick, Liversedge, Longley, Stocksbridge and host club Mirfield.
In the Under 16 boys section, there were over 90 matches played before Elliott Walker, of Huddersfield, ran out the winner beating Tim Charlton, of Liversedge, in the final.
The Under 14 boys and Under 12 boys finals were Stocksbridge affairs with Matthew Taylor beating Kyle Jones in the older age group and Luke Naylor beating Chris Taylor in the younger section.
In the girls competition, Stephanie White, of Mirfield, won both the Under 16 and Under 14 final.
The Under 12 girls tournament was won by Isla Findlay, of Liversedge, beating Stocksbridge’s Alex Norman in the final.
The Mirfield club also held their own annual junior tournament.
There were three sections with the mini tennis being won by 10-year-old Danyal Abubaker, Beth Knight beat Sam Clarke in the final of the Junior event and the Junior Team event (for members of the club’s team) was won by Archie Hynd, who played some fabulous tennis to beat Will Banyard, the 2010 runner-up, 6-3 in the final.
