All-Huddersfield ladies doubles final at Sellers International tennis tournament
THERE will be an all-Huddersfield final in the Sellers International at Edgerton tomorrow.
It’s in the Ladies Doubles at the annual tennis tournament, when Charlotte Kershaw and Charlotte Bradshaw take on clubmates Victoria Cran and Caroline Mount.
Thongsbridge teenager Andrew Atkinson is also through to the final of the 16 and Under Boys, after beating clubmate Ed Lovatt 7-5 6-4.
But he now faces a tough test against No1 seed Ben Clarke (Cambridge), who beat No8 seed Sam Clarke 6-1 6-1 in the semi-finals.
Atkinson is also No5 seed in the 18 Boys, and he’s won through the first two rounds in that, beating Ben King 6-3 6-3 and the unfortunate Lovatt again 6-0 6-2.
The first four seeds, Sean Evans, Alec Foot, Liam Earnshaw and Ben Crichton are also through in that age group.
In the 14 Boys, 12-year-old Euan Wilson-Baig – the Huddersfield prospect who travels to take up studies at the Barcelona Tennis Academy on Sunday – went out 6-2 6-1 to the No5 seed Jamie Oakes (Cheshire).
No1 see Milo Bargeron (Kent) is through in that section, while Huddersfield’s Luke Bolton lost to the No6 seed.
Huddersfield No1 seed Mike Tolman is through to the last eight in the main Men’s draw, as is home-club member Bradley Bond, who had a walkover following his excellent win against Faris McGrath.
No2 seed Phil Whalley is also through, while Huddersfield’s Oliver Moorhouse went out to experienced Yorkshire player Josh Thompson 6-0 6-1. Joe Babington-Allen went through against Harry Ward 6-4 6-7 10-8.
The Men’s Doubles, like the Ladies, has been played as a round robin and Huddersfield’s Andrew Douglas and Oliver Moorhouse won their group to reach the semi-finals, where they are up against Tolman and Whalley, the top two seeds from the singles.
In the other half of the draw, Peter Hall and Steve Shipley (Yorks) are up against Aidan Robson (Durham) and Joseph Abram.
