Amateur RU: University link is big YMCA boost

DAMON SCHOLES believes the University of Huddersfield’s decision to back YMCA will bring big benefits to the rugby union club.

Not only will the University put their name on the Yorkshire II club’s distinctive red and black hooped shirts.

But the student rugby union team will also base themselves at YM’s impressive Laund Hill complex after a spell at Lockwood Park.

And YM coach Scholes, who is preparing for tomorrow’s home clash with Goole (3.00), is planning some player recruitment.

“Huddersfield have done well through their links with the University, but the level they’re now playing at (National II North) means the standards required are pretty high.

“We have ambitions of our own, and I’m sure there are some students who will be good enough to play for us and help us progress.”

The University team are coached by Chris Stone, who is also a Rugby Football Union regional development officer, and said: “We’re delighted to be at Laund Hill.

“Huddersfield is lucky in having two excellent rugby union complexes, and having enjoyed our time at Lockwood Park, we’re now looking forward to linking up with YMCA. Damon Scholes and (joint head coach) Mark Eastwood are very progressive, and I think both ourselves and YMCA as a club will benefit.”
