HUDDERSFIELD RU’s highly-successful Junior set-up continues to reap dividends with countless call-ups for representative rugby.
But the Junior committee are not resting on their laurels and are eagerly pursuing newcomers to join the club through all the various age group levels.
Coaches and officials have launched a new recruitment drive, aimed at bringing in more juniors to boost their ranks, and, with a recent grant from Kirklees Council, will be canvassing local schools in the Huddersfield area, along with another ‘Open Day’ on Sunday, October 9.
An indication of the club’s successful junior approach came last season, when Huddersfield supplied no fewer than 11 of the West Yorkshire Under 13 squad who reached the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Cup – one of the star players being Lockwood Park winger Harry Franklin.
Already this season, three members of Huddersfield’s Under 14s (last year’s Under 13 side), Isaac Griffiths, Aaron Davis and Conor Field have been selected for the 15-strong Yorkshire Schools Elite Training group at Leeds Carnegie, while Harry Clarke and Seb Wood are involved the West Yorkshire set-up.
Field and Clarke are both centres, Griffiths plays at hooker for Huddersfield’s Under 14s, Wood is a fly-half and Davis plays in the back row, usually at No8.
The Under 14s kicked off their season at the weekend with a comfortable 67-15 stroll over Ilkley at Lockwood Park, with kicker Conor Field landing a fantastic nine out of 10 place kicks.
The ‘Recruitment Day’ on October 9, is open to anyone between the ages of 6 and 15, and is being staged between 10am and 12 noon.
There will be a group of experienced and enthusiastic coaches on hand, with a non-contact game arranged for all under 8s.
Junior officials are keen to point out, that the club is open anyone, and not restricted to members of the club.
Parents will be supplied with free bacon sandwiches, while any youngsters turning up for three sessions, will be eligible for a free T-shirt, and after six sessions their names will be included in a free draw to win a Nintendo Wii.
