YMCA 70 Castleford 14
YMCA SKIPPER Mark Whitehead rounded off his team’s season by crossing four times in a 10-try rout of Castleford at Laund Hill.
It brought the No8’s season tally to 18 and finally toppled the long-departed Ed Barber off the top of YM’s leading points-scoring list.
Fly-half Jon Smith also did his cause no harm with a faultless kicking performance, landing all 10 conversions.
With nothing but pride to play for, both sides thew the ball about, which suited Whitehead down to the ground.
Sean Gent and Jack Housley opened up Castleford for Whitehead’s first try after just three minutes, and although the visitors did cross the line twice during the game, it was pretty much one-way traffic.
Chris Beever created the space for youngster James Tindall and after Mattinson pulled one back for Cas, Nick Clarke took an inside pass from Smith for try No4.
A clever short pass from Smith put Tom Bullock over for a 28-7 half-time lead before Whitehead completed his hat trick within 10 minutes of the re-start of the second half.
Centre Alex Shaw then fittingly ended his career with an individual try after chasing and then charging down a clearance kick.
Niall Murphy got one for the front row with a close range effort, before Whitehead completed his quartet of touchdowns, when supporting Darren Neilly’s break.
Cas hooker Forth pulled back a consolation for them, before Fabrizio Leone-Mazza rounded off a good day for the home side when he ran 40 yards for try No10.
