RUGBY UNION: Today’s big festive derby between YMCA and Huddersfield at Laund Hill has been postponed because of the state of the frozen pitch. It’s a disappointment for both sides, Yorkshire II YMCA aiming to field some of their young, emerging players in what would have been a big money-spinner for the club, and Huddersfield wanting a run-out after nine successive defeats in National II North.Huddersfield director of rugby Mark Sowerby had been planning to give most of his first-team a workout, for at least a half each.“It would have given them a chance to run off some of their ‘Christmas paunch’ as we lead up to what will be another massively difficult game next Saturday at home to Caldy,” explained Sowerby. In yesterday’s Guinness Premiership games, it was Bath 24 Gloucester 8, Harlequins 20 Wasps 21, Leicester 32 Sale 6, London Irish 23 Saracens 19 and Newcastle 15 Leeds 16.Read
