Teen swimmer's dream

A SWIMMER from the Huddersfield area could become a Special Olympian.

Matthew Mann, 16, of Meltham, who has severe learning difficulties, impressed a national coach at a swimming gala in Hull.

Matthew, who is also dyslexic and has problems controlling his limbs, came away with three golds for the 25-metre and 50-metre breaststroke and the 25-metre freestyle.

His team-mates - also from the Huddersfield area - won a haul of medals, as well.

Matthew has now been asked to attend some national events, where he could win selection for the Special Olympics squad.

Matthew's coach Gemma Ripley said: "One of the GB team coaches spotted Matthew's talent and potential while he was swimming in Hull and invited him to higher national events to compete.

"This is with a view to getting him to join the team at a later date.

"We are all so excited with this news. He is an extremely fast swimmer and seems to do a length without taking a single breath.

"But now he needs to build stamina, so we have given him a personal instructor and free membership of the Galpharm Stadium Health and Fitness Club."

Matthew is being sponsored by Kirklees Active Leisure.

The next national event is in July and Matthew is aiming to compete in the national championships in 2009.

Ms Ripley added: "This is even more amazing considering that Matthew has only been training for 18 months and took part in his first gala last year.

"Matthew's success gives the rest of the team something to aim for. They are very pleased for him and all working hard themselves."

The swimming team trains at the stadium pool on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
