AFC Emley’s long unbeaten run in Northern Counties East Division One came to an abrupt halt at the Welfare Ground, thanks to a brilliant brace from Teversal forward Jordan Jones in the final five minutes.

Jones’s devastating double meant Darren Hepworth’s men slumped to a shock 3-2 defeat, having led 2-0 at the break, paying homage to the footballing cliché ‘a game of two halves’.

Emley started well with Ruben Jerome proving the most potent threat in the first half missing a golden opportunity inside five minutes when through on goal. His initial shot was straight at goalkeeper Ryan Brooks and the subsequent rebound was ballooned over the bar.

Emley took control of the game and the lead soon followed just before the half hour mark. A superb run by Jerome down the left wing resulted in a cross which, after a goal mouth scramble, fell to Jonny Irving who volleyed the ball past the stranded Brooks.

It was not long before the home fans were celebrating a second. Provider for the first turned to scorer as Jerome latched on to a poor clearance and finished neatly to double his sides’ lead after 34 minutes.

Teversal were on the ropes in the first half and were lucky to go in at the break just two goals down.

In the second half, Jerome switched from the left wing to the right and tellingly was much quieter. Emley struggled to create chances in the manner in which they did in the first half and Teversal took the initiative.

Right back Daniel Pearson rifled a low drive past Adam Lawlor to pull one back for the visitors in the 56th minute.

Emley looked rattled but seemed set to hold on for another three points with manager Hepworth bringing on substitute Jack Steers to reinforce the defence for the final ten minutes. and in order to sure up the defence in the final ten minutes.

The complete opposite came true and their backline was breached twice in quick succession. Jones’ equaliser was a sublime lob over Lawlor on 87 minutes and his second was an even more spectacular 25 yard curler, which Lawlor could have done nothing to keep out in the final minute of the game.

The home fans were stunned by Emley’s late capitulation, but they remain 7thin the league.
