The very mention of Brentford brings back pleasant memories for me.

And I’m delighted the Griffin Park club will be back in the Championship next season.

Their 1-0 win over Preston on Friday guaranteed them promotion and, after the incredible way they lost out to Doncaster in the previous campaign, I’m not surprised there were wild celebrations involving supporters and fans on the pitch at the final whistle.

Alan Judge scored the penalty which earned them the win and, with results elsewhere, it was enough to send them up.

I well remember our own celebrations on that same pitch in 1995, when we won that dramatic play-off semi-final thanks to a penalty shoot-out.

Every fan I talk to who was at that match talks about singing ‘Runaway’ and about the tremendous atmosphere there was behind that goal, in the double-tier stand.

I was delighted to score myself and help us earn the draw which took the game to extra-time, after we had gone behind early on, and then the penalties were taken at the opposite end to our fans when it came to the shoot-out.

I don’t think anyone who was there will every forget Bully – Darren Bullock – scoring the winning penalty to take us to Wembley, and it really was a great celebration and a great trip home.

Then, of course, we went on to win at Wembley, beating Marcus Stewart and Bristol Rovers to go up.

Happy days!
