Brighouse Sports made it four wins from as many West Riding Women’s League games with a dominant display at hard-working Pontefract.

The 2-0 win put them fourth in the Premier Division, six points behind leaders Harrogate Railway with four games in hand.

Brighouse controlled possession and went ahead when skipper Leanne Smith threaded an inch-perfect ball inside the full-back for Vanessa Holroyd to run onto and shoot home.

Sarah Hemingway shot straight at the keeper, Smith blazed over, and after great interplay down the right between Paige Green, Lauren Doyle and Emily Holroyd, the latter’s cross just evaded the lurking forwards.

The nearest Pontefract came in the first half was from an in-swinging corner which was dealt with at the second attempt by keeper Linzi Scarfe.

Brighouse’s back four of Leanne Webster, Green, Sheridan Drake and Charlotte Reid were in total control.

And the only surprise was that it took until the 80th minute for a second goal.

Reid’s corner was touched on by Vanessa Holroyd and Emily Holroyd was on hand to stab the ball home and seal the points.

Brighouse are in West Riding FA Women’s County Cup quarter-final action on Sunday, when they head to Ossett Town.
