Britannia Sports are plotting a bright future – at Paddock.

The District League club, originally based at Salendine Nook, have set up at home at the former cricket ground.

Paddock folded earlier this year.

The demise of the Huddersfield Cricket League club, founded in 1872, provided an opportunity for football team Britannia, who had been playing at Lindley Recreation Ground after leaving their original base in 2008.

They have taken over the West View Rise ground.

And after seven tough years at Lindley, they are hoping to go from strength to strength.

Loss of income from the old clubhouse bar hit Britannia, who also found it harder to attract players than when they were at Salendine Nook.

It was down to the dedication of chairman Robert Gledhill, treasurer Jonathan Bottomley and secretary Kieran Lenihan that the club kept putting out three teams.

It had looked as though the third team would fall by the wayside.

But the move to Paddock has already helped attract more than 50 players to pre-season training.

Britannia, who have made former captain David Noble first-team manager, would welcome more.

They will showcase their new facilities at Paddock this Saturday.

At the centre of the open day will be a friendly between a ‘Britannia Legends’ side and the current first team, kicking off at 2.30.

The legends side will include Bob Elliot, Steve Wordon, Robert Gledhill, Barry Howe and Chris Green.

There will be food for sale and family activities.
