As the old saying goes, ‘birds of a feather flock together.’

And that was certainly the case when 88 lady golfers from all over the district flocked to Huddersfield for the club’s first-ever Turkey Trot.

The field was full for the 18-hole Stableford, which had a rocket start.

Ladies had arrived early for a glass of mulled wine before venturing out, duly warmed in the cool autumn sunshine.

In the end it was a home bird who triumphed, two-times Yorkshire  Challenge Bowl winner Christine Barnett with her partner Julia Sunderland from Lightcliffe, who scored 39 points, two ahead of the rest of the field.

Sharon Bayton and Ann Fintoff, Bingley St Ives, were second on a countback with  37 points ahead of third placed Shirley Jewkes and Paula Sagar-West, of Bradford and Helen Jacques and Sarah Wickens, Lightcliffe in fourth on 36.

Competitors returned to the clubhouse for turkey sandwiches and mince pie before the presentation of  seasonal hampers by Fixby Lady Captain Maxine Gothard.

Alison Tracey, one of the organisers, said: “It was great to see so many ladies enjoying themselves at our inaugural event. I think the mulled wine certainly helped!

“We've already got some new ideas for next year’s event and look forward to welcoming as many local ladies as possible”.

*The following day, 56 golfers took part in the Golf in the Dark event at Fixby over four holes.

Tee boxes, fairways, bunkers, greens and flagsticks were all illuminated, with players using illuminated golf balls.

It was followed by a  Halloween-themed hot buffet afterwards. Winners were Brad Tupman and Derek Barnett, who scored an impressive 11 Stableford points over the four holes.
