ENGLAND legend Ian Botham has that insisted Monty Panesar (right) must be given his Ashes debut in Adelaide after being overlooked for the disastrous opening Test in Brisbane.

Australia completed an emphatic 277-run win in the opening Ashes Test after England's resistance crumbled in the first 21 overs of the final day at the Gabba.

Panesar was omitted from the team with veteran fellow spinner Ashley Giles given the go-ahead and the Northants player looks likely to be drafted in amid vociferous calls for his inclusion.

"The one that's got to play is Monty Panesar," said Botham.

"Why he wasn't playing this game is a mystery."
