Cawthorne opened up a 10-point lead in the Jedi Sports Championship in a badly rain-hit Drakes Huddersfield Cricket League programme.

They were the only side to complete their fixture, defeating Thongsbridge at Dark Lane after Liam Wiles scored an excellent century.

Amazingly, batting first, leaders Cawthorne got their 50 overs in and piled up 262-9 on the back of Wiles’ 108.

Chris Matthewman finished on 58 not out while Ben Howitt collected six for 83 from his 14 overs.

With rain around, they were off the field for 93minutes, meaning 26 overs had been lost.

Thongsbridge ended up chasing a revised total of 158 – and they got mighty close with 151-9 off 24 overs (enough for two points), and showing the real value of the new rain rule.

Opener Tom Kemp hit 40 for the Holme Valley side while Tom Raven-Hill backed him up with 42, but they fell just short.

Wiles added two for 44 to his century while his Cawthorne bowling colleagues each picked up two wickets – Muztuza Hussain, Jake Rodgers and skipper Chris Walmsley.

The Oddfellows Cup finalists now have 83 points, 10 ahead of Armitage Bridge in the race to make the Premiership.

Scholes, who managed just two overs at Shelley before the game was abandoned, retain their 13-point lead in the top flight because nearest challengers Hoylandswaine were unable to get on the field at Honley.

Twelve overs were possible in Mirfield as Moorlands took on Slaithwaite, with the Colne Valley men reaching 47-2 thanks to 20 not out from Aussie Matt Bremner and 22 from Ian Holt.

Chris Lloyd and Darrell Sykes shared the wickets before bad weather prevented any more play.

Slaithwaite remain bottom of the table with 32 points, five adrift of Moorlands who are also in the relegation zone.

Broad Oak, who were rained off at home to Golcar, are five points above the safety line.
