MELTHAM’S Barry Shaw produced the only century of the day in the Drakes Huddersfield League’s Second Eleven cricket programme – and still came up empty-handed in the Premiership Two clash with Scholes.

The Mean Lane club’s all-rounder scored exactly 100 not out, batting at No5, but it was very much a one-man show, as Ervin Clarke’s 14 was the next highest score as the home side closed on 167-8, Gareth Wakefield’s four for 49 the pick of the visitors’ bowling attack.

Scholes lost five wickets in reaching their target, but they were never in real trouble, as led by Louis Sykes’ 36 and Tom Boorman’s 30, the top five batsmen all made useful contributions.

Two 15-year-olds stole the limelight at Barkisland, where Delph & Dobcross were the visitors.

Aaron Lees took five for 27 for Delph, having earlier made 26 with the bat, but couldn’t deny Barkisland victory when their 15-year-old opener Seth Oddy hit a half-century, and put on 111 for the first wicket with Jacob Travis (43) in their four-wicket win.

In the Delph innings, Josh Travis and Charlie Cocking each claimed four-wicket hauls in the 178 total.

Youth and experience did for Skelmanthorpe at Elland, where Howard Palmer and Ashton Blakey (son of Richard) steered the home side close to 200.

Palmer made 82, while Blakey was still there unbeaten on 44, along with Chris Palmer (23no) at the end of 50 overs.

Ryan Jagger replied with 36, but the Palmer brothers Ryan and Chris each took three wickets to restrict the visitors to 151-9.

Shepley captain Rob Denton hit 80 and put on 140 for the fifth-wicket with Chris Cox (64) as Shepley made 245-7 against neighbours Kirkburton.

Mike Smith replied with 63, but from 94-2 Burton slipped to 183-9, Ian Walker taking three for 46.

Gareth Crowther made 61 as Golcar inflicted defeat on title-holders Slaithwaite, while in the Championship, Ben Downend took five wickets for Micklehurst, but their batting let them down as Thongsbridge won by 21 runs.

Jason Greenway hit 88 before Tim Collier (52no) and John Hunter (35no) put on an unbroken 81 for the ninth wicket as Hall Bower totalled 273-8.

And that was much, much too many for Holmfirth who struggled against Mark Beaumont (five for 27), with only Michael Battye-Wood (51) impressing.

Linthwaite’s Gavin Dyson had a good all-round day, making 53 and then taking five for 40 against Cawthorne in the Conference, while Rastrick’s Colin Jowett showed there is still life in the ‘old dog’ yet as he top-scored with 66, but ended on the losing side as Paddock won by six wickets, as Shah Nawaz (51), Dean Wood (46no) and Mark Turner (39) led them home.
