FORMER Yorkshire and England batsman Richard Blakey is the latest addition to Huddersfield New College’s Academy, where he is supplementing coaching sessions for budding young cricketers.

The 43-year-old former Elland product is now coaching at the Salendine Nook College on Wednesday afternoons, when he is working on advanced batting and wicketkeeping sessions.

Head of Development Sport, Jamie Marsden said: “It is a massive coup for the College and the Cricket Academy.

“Richard has played at the highest level and we hope that players embrace his coaching and take the opportunity to speak with Richard about their personal development and what it takes to be a professional athlete.”

Any promising cricketers who wish to attend the HNC Academy are welcome at the next open evening to speak with coaching staff and gain an insight into the Academy.

The Academy’s young cricketers recently embarked on a two-day tour of Lords, building on the relationship the College have formed with the MCC followed their annual game in Huddersfield.

Over the two days, the Academy squad enjoyed an indoor net session with an MCC coach, followed by a six-a-side competition.

The trip also included a tour of the ground and changing rooms.

“Once again this was an excellent opportunity for our cricketers to experience an environment many don’t get to see,” added Marsden.

“It has also given them an insight into the facilities and ethos of elite sport.”

The Academy will again be hosting a match with an MCC side during next summer, which due to the unfortunate events at Lascelles Hall, coach Dave Weston’s side will entertain the visitors at Barkisland, on Wednesday, June 29.
