THE Drakes Huddersfield League had something to celebrate this week when a representative side won the annual Cleckheaton Floodlit Twenty/20 tournament.
The four-team event also involved the host club, Wrenthorpe from the Central Yorkshire League and a Bradford League select team.
In the semi-final, Huddersfield, led by Honley’s Rob Moore, defeated Cleckheaton, bowling them out for 108 with three wickets apiece from Harlon Haye and Enamul Haque.
Matt Cox (33no) and Steve Whitwam (31) then led the Drakes men home by five wickets.
In the final they came up against the powerful JCT600 Sovereigns Bradford League side (including former Drakes League player Glenn Roberts) and held them to 140-9.
Ryan Robinson claimed two for 15 and Haque two for 22.
Skippered in the final by Simon Kelly (the matches were played on separate days) the Drakes League side were spearheaded by Dennis Lonergan, who hit 52 before Kelly (27) and James Taylor (26) took them to a four-wicket victory.
“The conditions weren’t brilliant with all the rain, but it was a good experience playing under the floodlights with everyone in coloured clothing,” said Moore.
“And of course, it was brilliant to get one over the Bradford League for a change!”
Moore was joined by Robinson, Lonergan, Kelly, Cox, Whitwam, Haye, Haque, Max Joice, Craig Fletcher and Mick Illingworth in the semis, while Taylor, James Crossland and Jack Hargreaves figured in the final.
