HUDDERSFIELD New College Academy are through to the final of the National Under 17 Schools Cup competition.

Ed Wilson was the star performer as they recorded a notable victory over Bedford as they chased down 253 off 40 overs.

Yorkshire Academy player Wilson hit 76 and Jacob Waterson 53 not out and they will now face Portsmouth Grammar school or Filton College, from Bristol, in the final at Cunmore in Oxfordshire, on Wednesday, September 14.

However, New College lost by 51 runs to the MCC in their annual match.

The MCC batted first in the match at Barkisland, but found it hard to get going due to good bowling by Alex Walker and Tom Brook, going to lunch at 74-4.

After lunch MCC got on top of the bowling with Steve Lawrence and Simon Birtwhistle finishing on 68 and 69, respectively, as they declared on 225-7.

In reply Tom Booth hit a quick 40 and there were good contributions from Joe Bowman and Jacob Waterson, who finished on 69 not out, but the New College, missing both Tom Boorman and Durham trialist Oliver Ashford, who were injured in the win over Bedford school, failed to reach their target.
