PREMIER league newcomers Almondbury Wesleyans got away to a winning start in their opener against Flockton, taking maximum points, but it was a bleak start for League champions Cawthorne.

Over at Kaye Lane, Tom Binns (70) and Armitage Bridge man Tom Oakes (64) steered Wesleyans to 208-5 before Neil Berry took over with the ball for the newly-promoted side, picking up four for 11 from just 2.3 overs, while Zach Stanger returned three for 25 as Flockton were sent back for 152, 71 of which came from the bat of Alex Topham.

Meanwhile, the League champions were opening their account at Thurstonland, where they came a real cropper against Lee Booth.

Batting first, Thurstonland were in trouble after losing four of their first five batsmen in single figures until ex-Leymoor and Golcar all-rounder Martin Allison hit 63 and formed a good partnership with Booth, who made 55 to steer Thurstonland to 175-8, Paul Tasker having taken five for 35 for Cawthorne.

However, the visitors were soon in the mire themselves with Booth ripping out the top of the order with five for 18 from 11.3 overs, while Damien Pawson (three for 29) and Dave Rishton (two for 23) finished the job off.
