Cricketing superstar Shahid Afridi is to appear at Mount Cricket Club in Batley.

The Pakistani cricket legend will be the special guest at the Huddersfield Central League club’s special cricket festival on May 17.

In addition, Mount will be supporting Afridi’s foundation in order to help him complete work at his hospital back in Pakistan.

“Boom Boom” Afridi was an integral part of the Pakistan side that won the ICC World Twenty20 in 2009.

“The idea is for Afridi to come and talk about his foundation at our event, and in return he will be doing some coaching sessions with the Under 9 and Under 13 squads and the disabled players,” said Mount’s vice chairman Yusuf Kayat.

Afridi, who recently signed up to play for Northamptonshire this season, will appear at the event ten days before his first T20 match with the Steelbacks.

Kayat said that there had been talks going on between Afridi and the club, and that they would have loved to announce it on the 38th Annual Presentation Night which took place last Saturday in front of 800 people.

However, the confirmation of Afridi’s appearance did not arrive until Monday.

“It was myself and the development officer that arranged this,” said Kayat.

“We didn’t even tell the chairman until the night before we had the absolute confirmation.

“We told him the evening before we went public with the news and he couldn’t believe it! He kept asking us if it was true!

“We are also waiting for a video from Shahid Afridi where he greets Mount Cricket Club, and says that he will be appearing. All that will be on our Facebook page.”
