DANIEL PAYNE was the man in form as Almondbury Wesleyans recorded a one-run win against Thongsbridge Under 13s in Area A of the Sellers Huddersfield Junior League.

Payne hit 25 as the Wesleyans totalled 110-4 and then took two wickets before bowling the last delivery of the match, restricting Thongsbridge to just one when they needed three to win.

Upperthong A needed eight off the last over to win at Kirkburton but could manage only four with wicketkeeper George Whittaker taking two catches and a last over stumping to follow his batting retirement and help his team to victory.

Lepton beat Hall Bower in the last over with two brilliant catches by Isaac Marriott turning the game for Lepton after the home team had been in a good position.

Mirfield continue to set the pace in Area C after the previously unbeaten Lascelles Hall fell to Clayton West in a low-scoring game, with Jack Armitage in the runs for the Hall and Lewis Pelk for Clayton.

Meltham posted the highest score of 156, closely followed by Mirfield on 149 in their easy wins over Green Moor and Scholes respectively.

Five of the eight second-round ties of the Examiner Salver Cup were completed with two major shocks.

Upperthong lost to Mirfield on a slow wicket with the Mirfield run machine Tom Edwards again retiring on 25.

And Holmfirth A had an excellent win over previously unbeaten Slaithwaite, with Niall Hubbard of Holmfirth having an outstanding match taking five wickets for five runs with his slow left-arm spin and scoring 25 runs.
