minor County player Scott Richardson too five for 43 for Woodlands to end Hoylandswaine’s hopes of landing the Heavy Woollen Cup.

In the final at Ossett, the Drakes Premiership side looked to be powering towards victory at 81-0 and just 182 to chase.

But Richardson stepped up with his man-of-the-match display to rip the heart out of the Swaine order and, with Chris Brice taking three for 14 in his 10 overs of left-arm spin, the Haigh Lane men fell 34 runs short.

Gharib Nawaz, who is well known to Bradford League followers following his spells with Keighley, Spen Victoria, Saltaire, East Bierley and Baildon, put Swaine in a strong position after he hammered 60 off just 57 balls.

He included two sixes and 11 fours in his knock but once he had gone, and partner Alex Morris – who was trapped lbw by Brice – Woodlands started to believe they were in with a sniff.

Richardson ensured it was a game-changing shift in momentum as he ripped out five middle-order batsmen to leave Hoylandswaine’s hopes in tatters at 124-8.

Woodlands were not going to let Hoylandswaine off the hook, either.

After Keswick Williams was trapped lbw to give Brice his third wicket, Elliot Richardson - younger brother of Scot - gained consolation for the earlier punishment he had been subjected to by Nawaz by bowling last man Javed Iqbal with 4.2 overs remaining.

Earlier, Woodlands had found batting difficult, but they were anchored by Cumberland batsman Logan Weston, who made 59 from 106 balls (one six and nine fours).

He pulled them round from 89-6 – Iqbal took four for 29 for Swaine – and with skipper Sam Frankland hitting 25, they were able to post what was eventually a match-winning total.
