Kirkburton won a bowl-out to reach the quarter-finals of the Heavy Woollen Cup.

And the Drakes Premiership side now meet Bradford League leaders Woodlands at Riley Lane this Sunday, June 8 (1pm).

After many frustrations in trying to stage their second-round match against Hanging Heaton – who are fifth in Division One of the JCT600 Bradford League – they aimed to play on Wednesday night but, because of rain, ended up deciding the outcome with the bowl-out (cricket’s equivalent of football’s penalty shoot-out).

Each team nominates five bowlers to go alternately with one delivery to try and hit the stumps, and Kirkburton proved expert to record a 4-2 win.

Kirkburton’s first four bowlers – Lewis Richardson, Tom Burkinshaw, Jonny Butterfield and Matt Crookes – all hit while the second and third bowlers for Hanging Heaton missed.

Burton’s Drakes top-flight rivals Delph & Dobcross and Shepley are also both at home in the Heavy Woollen on Sunday.

Delph, who knocked out Golcar last weekend, host Pudsey Congs at Huddersfield Road while Shepley take on Townville at Marsh Lane.

Heavy Woollen on Sunday: Delph v Pudsey Congs, Scholes (Central Yorkshire) v Methley, Kirkburton v Woodlands, Shepley v Townville.

In the second XI Crowther Cup, the Drakes League are guaranteed a representative in the semi-finals because their only two sides left – Moorlands and Skelmanthorpe – play each other in Mirfield.

Crowther Cup on Sunday: Moorlands v Skelmanthorpe, Morley v Ossett, Spen Vic v Hanging Heaton, Buttershaw St Paul’s v New Farnley.
