Ecstasy for Elland, delight for Delph and grimaces for Golcar.

Those were the emotions which summed up the finish to the Drakes League Second XI programme.

Elland were desperately trying to avoid becoming the first Hullen Edge side to be relegated since 1960 – and they achieved it with a cracking home win against Broad Oak.

That result meant agony for Golcar, who were relegated from Premiership Two alongside Meltham despite winning at home against Slaithwaite.

There was an unsatisfactory end to the Frank Platt Championship Two season as Shepley clinched the title thanks to Shelley not being able to raise a side, but Delph beat Hall Bower to leapfrog them and clinch the second promotion place.

At Broad Oak, Elland were indebted to Nasser Rahman’s cracking 90 and Philip Eastwood’s 55 in reaching 262 all out, Will Metcalfe and Nick Howard taking three wickets apiece. Howard led the Oak reply with 47, but Chris Walker had the measure of the home line-up and finished with five for 37 in 8.4 overs as they were dismissed for 191.

Golcar, who started the day on the same number of points as Elland but with fewer outright wins, must have thought they were in with a chance of survival when they took five points off Slaithwaite, for whom Freddie Garside hit 86 not out in their 197-8. Experienced Craig Horner took three wickets and then helped guide Golcar to victory at 201-8 with a half century – Asif Iqbal finishing the job on 82 not out.
