Favourites Slaithwaite have been drawn away in the semi-finals of the Drakes League Oddfellows Cup.

The Hill Top side – second in the Frank Platt Championship and very hot on the promotion trail – visit Emley in their last-four clash on Sunday, July 21, aiming to make the showpiece.

On that same day, Broad Oak (fourth in the Championship) will visit either Cawthorne or Paddock, who play their quarter-final clash this Sunday (July 7).

The Oddfellows Cup is the main knockout for clubs outside the Drakes Premiership, while the Earnshaw Cup is for Second XIs not in the top flight.

The semi-finals of that competition will also be played on July 21, with Shepley at home to Linthwaite and Hall Bower at home to Deny Dale.

Somerset’s Arul Suppiah has retired at the age of 29 due to injury.

Suppiah, a top order batsman whose occasional spin earned him world record Twenty20 figures of six for five in 2011, has been suffering from problems in both knees.

Born in Malaysia but a cricketing product of the renowned Millfield School, Suppiah made his Somerset debut in 2002 and went on to play 100 first-class fixtures.

He also featured in 94 List A matches and 82 T20 games.

“I am devastated to have to retire from the game that I have always loved,” said Suppiah. “This is the hardest decision of my life, especially having played for Somerset for so long. After consultation with the specialist, I realise I have no choice but to retire.

“I have so many happy memories of my time at Somerset and would like to thank everybody for their support.”
