A 15-year-old batsman is set for a sensational Sykes Cup final call-up.

Muhammad Nadeem Ali is all set to play for Golcar in the arrowselfdrive.com showpiece against Hoylandswaine.

He’s got the call to play in Sunday’s final at Honley (1pm) because Golcar are without powerful opening batsman Niall Lockley, who is away on holiday.

Ali has been in solid form for the Swallow Lane second XI and helped them power to the top of the Jedi Sports Championship Two.

Only last weekend, he hit 68 in the six-wicket home win against Moorlands, when Golcar established a 23-point lead over their Mirfield rivals.

“Ali is a cracking little batsman who has been getting a lot of runs this season in the second team, so he will play instead of Niall,” explained Golcar skipper Steve Whitwam.

“He is chuffed to bits to get the chance and I firmly believe he can do us a job.

“Ali has been an outstanding performer in the Seconds this summer, he is more than capable in the field and he will definitely hold his own down the batting order.”

James Howson will be promoted to open the innings alongside Whitwam against Drakes League leaders Hoylandswaine, who are without experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Alan Mynett (on holiday).

Swaine expect skipper Michael Cranmer will, with treatment this week, recover from the sprained right knee which forced him off in their T20 Trophy final victory against Barkisland.

Cranmer will not be risked in this Saturday’s Premiership clash against Barkisland at Haigh Lane to give him extra time to be ready for Sunday, when Swaine defend the trophy they won against Shepley at Elland last year.

Golcar entertain Honley in the top-flight on Saturday.
