Huddersfield have lost their grip on the Joe Lumb Cup.

The representative Under 17s, defending the silverware, were beaten by 83 runs by East Yorkshire at Broad Oak in what was a disappointing result.

Under overcast skies, Huddersfield won the toss and elected to field. On a slow wicket, the East Yorkshire openers batted cautiously.

Lewis Richardson got Hanley to sky a catch to Birkhead in the eighth over. Hatfield soon followed in the 13th over, leaving East Yorkshire 37-2.

Opposing captain Norman and Drewery then added 95 for the third wicket. Both batted sensibly and brought up their half centuries in the 30th over.

By this time, Huddersfield had brought spin on at both ends – a tactic which has strangled the scoring rate and taken wickets this season. However, Drewery was able to take 20 from a Tim Taylor over and opener Norman took 12 from another.

Taylor (who took nine wickets in the semi-finals) brought himself off after eight wicketless overs. This proved to be a good decision as debutant Matt Crookes bowled unchanged from the Felk Style Road end, from the 31st over.

Crookes removed Drewery (61 runs) in the 33rd over, leaving East Yorkshire at 132-3. Rastrick’s Jordan Ghani was introduced from the Car Park end in the 38th over and immediately removed Norman for a patient 64.

At 153-4 with 12 overs left, East Yorkshire were looking at a score of 230. However, tight bowling from Crookes and wickets from Ghani restricted East Yorkshire to 200-8 in their 50 overs.

Ghani was the pick of the bowlers with four for 26 from eight overs and the elusive Crookes finished with one for 28 from 10 overs of accurate slow left-arm.

Few East Yorkshire batsmen made double figures. Hewitt was undefeated on 20 and took 12 from the 49th over.

Deprived of regular batsmen Will Fraine, Rohan Randhawa and the Booth twins, Huddersfield began their innings with the emphasis on not losing wickets and adopting a similarly patient approach.

In brighter conditions, Marsden’s Joe Smith was caught in the gully in the second over and captain Taylor (who has been in good form with the bat this season) departed in the seventh over, with Huddersfield at 9-2.

With an uphill battle to climb and with batsmen who have not been required to contribute over the past two seasons, the task became enormous.

Alex Rank (Clayton West) departed in the 21st over. East Yorkshire then turned to leg spin and Crookes was bowled in the 22nd, leaving Huddersfield on a sorry 55-5.

Leg-spinner Croft then continued to mop up the Huddersfield lower order, finishing with five for 27 and accounting for Lockwood, Ghani, Clegg and Richardson in succession.

By the 34th over, Huddersfield were expecting the last rites at 107-9.

Watching all this carnage from the other end was opener Saqib Matlub (Almondbury Wesleyans). He had batted patiently since the start of the innings, protecting his wicket and hitting the bad ball.

With nine wickets down, he decided to cut loose, but was caught on the boundary attempting to score a half century. This left Huddersfield at 117 all out.

East Yorkshire celebrated a well deserved victory and skipper Norman was adjudged the man of the match for his patient 64

Huddersfield were obviously disappointed with their 83-run loss, which did not do justice to their dominating performances in the five previous matches.

This generation has enjoyed success over the past three seasons and recognition must go to Tim Taylor, Will Fraine, Joe Smith, Rohan Randhawa, Alex Clegg, Josh Holling and Bradley Birkhead, who are all unavailable next year.

The 2014 team will be formed around existing experience and exciting young players from the Taverners organisation.

Thanks were expressed to players, parents, coaches, hosting clubs and everyone involved with the Huddersfield Joe Lumb organisation.
