Huddersfield’s Joe Lumb Cup team outclassed Scarborough with a whirlwind 10-wicket victory and remain on course for the final.

Should Huddersfield retain leadership of their group – their final match is against Halifax at Slaithwaite on July 12 – they would play the second-placed team from the other group for a place in the Joe Lumb Final.

Were they to lose at that stage, they would have a place in the subsidiary Jack Lee Final.

At scenic Folkton & Flixton CC, Scarborough won the toss and, despite the earlier showers and cloudy overhead conditions, elected to make first use of a firm and pacy wicket.

With the score on zero, Honley’s Alec Jakeman struck with the sixth ball of the match - Hamza Zaffar of Golcar taking a fine catch at mid-wicket.

Butler and Wharton were going nicely for Scarborough, but in the 10th over, Upperthong’s Tom Mighall skittled Wharton to leave Scarborough at 33-2.

Scarborough then experienced a mini-collapse.

For the 12th over, Elland’s Siraj Sajid replaced Mighall from the Cemetery End and his second ball - a rank long-hop - was calmly caught on the leg-side boundary by Mighall.

Then, in the 15th over, Honley’s Tommy Woodhead had opener Butler caught behind for 15. This left Scarborough reeling at 37-4, with an uphill task to set a decent total.

Watson and Harrison Male batted aggressively, putting on 33 in the next six overs, but Zaffar replaced Woodhead from the Clubhouse End and experienced success with his second delivery - Delph’s Nathan Jones snaring Male for 20, leaving Scarborough at 70-5 after 21.

Wickets then fell every over – Sajid had Bowes caught by Scholes’ Jack Cooper for one, Zaffar trapped Watson lbw for 23 and Sajid got Snowball to chip one back to him for one, leaving Scarborough in a mess at 86-8.

Things got worse in the 24th over when the Robb brothers got into a mix-up, leading to a run out. In the next over, Zaffar crowned an excellent début performance, beating the other Robb brother for pace, and Scarborough were 90 all out in exactly 100 minutes.

Sajid finished with three for 37 from seven overs and Zaffar three for 11 from only 2.4.

Following an extended tea break, Huddersfield openers Nathan Jones and Cartworth’s Harry Franklin started steadily.

They negotiated the pace of Bowes and the leg spin of Watson and were 14-0 off four. Jones then opened his shoulders, finding the gaps in the field and dismissing anything short on the leg side.

Franklin, initially circumspect, provided good support, driving any width through the gaps in the field. They brought up their untroubled 50 partnership in 10th over, then really cut loose at 10 per over.

Victory was achieved after 15 overs in 44 minutes.

Jones finished with 45 from only 43 balls, hitting five boundaries. Franklin finished with 40 from 47 balls, hitting seven boundaries.
