Delph add to season’s haul

DEPH & DOBCROSS collected another piece of silverware for the clubhouse, when their Second team lifted the Earnshaw Cup after a thrilling last-ball victory over Clayton West in the final.

The knockout competition, for teams outside the Premiership Second Elevens, went right to the wire after 17-year-old Howie Senior carried his bat for Clayton with a superb maiden century as the home side totalled 276-3.

Senior finished unbeaten on 126, while his fellow opener Will Lockwood scored 88 set an imposing 45-over target for the visitors.

Delph & Dobcross (whose first team had lifted the Sykes Cup last month) set about chasing the total with Brad Cunningham making 68 and Phil Lees 42.

Clayton West were hampered by dropped catches, but nevertheless, going into the last three overs, Delph still required 33, and then 14 off the last over, bowled by Alex Rank (son of first team stalwart Stuart).

Another dropped catch in that final over, and a scrambled single off the fifth delivery left Delph needing a six off the final ball of the game.

Unfortunately for the youngster, Ian Cotterill smashed it away for a maximum to win the game for Delph, leaving him unbeaten on 41 and Clayton to reflect on what might have been.

The trophy was presented to the Delph skipper Phil Lees by Donald Earnshaw.

In the Premiership, there is still everything to play for with three clubs still in with a chance of the title.

Honley are in pole position on 92 points, having beaten Broad Oak by nine wickets, Chris Woodhead hitting an unbeaten 45 and Joe McNamara 37 not out.

Kirkburton are just one point behind ater their 10-wicket romp over Marsden, while Hoylandswaine’s eight-wicket win over Skelmanthorpe kept them in touch, four points behind the leaders after their eight-wicket win.
