Gharib Nawaz hit a fine century as champions Hoylandswaine launched the defence of their Byrom Shield title with victory over Broad Oak in the Drakes Premiership.

The Colne Valley side, promoted as Jedi Sports Championship champions last summer, posted 218-9 at Haigh Lane thanks to 97 from Johnny Greaves and 43 from Harvey Booth.

But Swaine – for whom Yasir Abbas and Ben Potter claimed three wickets apiece – coasted to an eight-wicket victory thanks to Nawaz scoring exactly 100 and Alex Morris 62.

Fellow promoted side Moorlands also lost after failing to defend 183 at Kirkburton, but they did pick up two bonus points for taking eight wickets in the Drakes’ new system.

Aussie Chris Lloyd hit 56 not out and new signing David Wynn 33 for Moorlands, who were pegged back by three wickets each from Craig Fletcher and Andrew Smith.

Smith then hit 49 and new signing from Lascelles Hall, Nick Sharp, 57 not out as the Riley Lane side got home, Andrew Walker taking three for 37 for the visitors.

Australian signing Matthew Bremner, who played last season at Townville, was the hero for Slaithwaite with 97 not out as they won the Colne Valley derby against Golcar at Hill Top.

His effort helped Slaithwaite post 178-8 in reply to 175 all out in which David Hales took six for 44.

There was a remarkable tie at Barkisland, where Shelley were the visitors.

Shelley put up 220 with Abdul Wahid hitting 62 and Darren Robinson also had a half century in reply as the score was matched. Matt Steers, who had claimed four for 41, had 34 with the bat.

Tim Taylor claimed four for 37 as Honley dismissed last year’s runners-up Shepley for 133 in reply to 138-9.

Skipper Eddie Wilson had earlier hit 45 and Taylor 36, while Nasir Jamal took four for 33 for the visitors and Amar Rashid three for 31.

Tommy Boorman, who has spent two years playing in Australia and New Zealand, produced a dramatic spell of three for 24 with his occasional spin to take Scholes to victory over Delph at Chapelgate.

Delph had looked on course to challenge a home total of 178 in which Joe Carter hit an excellent 58 and Pete Drysdale 33, but Boorman’s effort left them 155 all out. Adam France and Josh Brook had three wickets each for the victors.

Paul Winrow hit 94 for Elland in a total of 243-7 which proved too much for Skelmanthorpe at Lidgett Lane.

James Crossland’s side were bowled out for 157 with overseas signing Robin Broom leading the way with four for 25.

In the Jedi Sports Championship there were wins for Marsden, Armitage Bridge, Clayton West, Holmfirth, Lascelles Hall – for whom Richardson hit 125 - and Thongsbridge.

In the Cedar Court Conference, there was a hat trick for Hashmi of Lepton in figures of five for 41, but they were still beaten by Hall Bower.
