BRIGHOUSE Cricket Club are hoping for big things from new arrival Johannes Vee.

The South African-born player goes into Bradford League Second Division action at Yeadon tomorrow aiming to help the 12th-placed side clinch a fourth win in their 11th game of the season.

Vee made an immediate impact on his debut in the home clash with 10th-placed Hartshead Moor, but couldn’t inspire a derby debut as Brighouse were beaten by 12 runs.

His five for 42 return off 15 overs helped limit Hartshead to 160-8 (Matthew Evans 47).

Vee’s victims included former Brighouse skipper Will Smith (19), and the visitors were struggling at 128-6.

But they were let off the hook – and a late run flurry proved crucial.

Brighouse started their innings steadily until Smith began to exact his revenge.

He took the wicket of opener Zahir Hussain for 39 and followed this with the key wicket of captain Umar Salim (10), catching him off his own bowling, finally returning figures of three for 44.

Smith’s bowling partner Adnan Raza Ali proved even more effective, taking four wickets for 27, including that of Vee.

Sadaqat Zaman top scored for Brighouse with a knock of 50 but it was not enough to get his side over the line.

Yeadon go into tomorrow’s game in sixth place after beating Bankfoot.
