THREE potential Sykes Cup sponsors are waiting in the wings should troubled Romida Sports end their backing of the Drakes Huddersfield Cricket League’s top knockout competition.
The cricket goods supplier ceased trading a couple of weeks ago when administrators were called in, closing their shops at Brighouse, Liverpool, Leatherhead and the head office at Rochdale.
Drakes League officials are still awaiting developments but are determined to stand by their sponsor – Romida also back the Twenty/20 tournament – until the firm say they are unable to continue.
League chairman Trevor Atkinson said: “Out of respect to Romida and what they have done for the league in the past, we are prepared to wait until the company make a decision on their future.
“However, I can reassure our clubs that we have already had three firm expressions of interest in sponsoring the Drakes League’s cup competitions – from important companies – should Romida inform us they are unable to continue with their backing.”
Romida put their name to the Sykes Cup in 2003 when they took over from Hills Supplies. In 2009, they started backing the Twenty/20 Trophy, which was previously known as the Examiner Eights before switching to its current format in 2007.
