Tom Brook was the outstanding performer as Scholes reached the Sykes Cup final – but it was a very close call against battling Moorlands.

In a low-scoring semi-final at Memorial Park in Mirfield – interrupted by a torrential thunderstorm at tea – the Drakes League leaders were pushed all the way before securing a three-wicket success.

All-rounder Brook – known as Bruiser – first starred with the ball, taking a sensational five for seven in his 10 overs as Moorlands were reduced to 57-8 before recovering to 122 all out thanks to a fine partnership between Chris Lloyd (38) and Andrew Walker (33).

Scholes were themselves in big trouble at 60-6 before Brook, who finished on 44 not out, shared a match-winning stand with No8 Tommy Boorman (34).

Victorious skipper James Noble said: “It was a fantastic semi-final and a real credit to both sides.

“It was played in the right spirit all the way through and it could have gone either way.

“As a match it was a great advert for cricket and for the Drakes League and we were obviously delighted to come through in the end.

“Bruiser was fantastic for us with five for seven and 40-odd not out, Tommy Boorman was also superb in their partnership, and I’m delighted for all the lads because we’ve worked very hard.

“It’s terrific for our players and supporters to have a Sykes Cup final to look forward to and I’m especially delighted for our keeper, Richard Holmes, to be going to a first final after 34 years of senior cricket.

“He’s been brilliant for us over a long period of time and he’s a vital part of our team make-up.”

Scholes will meet either Kirkburton or Barkisland in the final of the arrowselfdrive sponsored knockout at Elland’s Hullen Edge on Sunday, August 9.

Kirkburton – who were knocked out of the Heavy Woollen Cup by Hoylandswaine – host the second semi-final at Riley Lane this coming Sunday.
