Sykes Cup final umpires named

CONGRATULATIONS to umpires Phillip Mitton and David Copping, who will officiate at the arrowselfdrive.com Sykes Cup final. It’s reward for a summer of hard graft and tough decision-making and they should be lauded for earning the honour of standing in the final at Elland a week tomorrow, when Shepley take on Hoylandswaine. It’s a first final for Copping, from Barnsley, but a second for Mitton, from Lindley. For the record, Richard Pearce and Colin Davies take charge of tomorrow’s Oddfellow Cup final between Cawthorne and Slaithwaite (1.00), while the Earnshaw Cup final between Shepley and Hall Bower starts at 1.30.

Midwood move

THERE are few people in Huddersfield cricket who don’t know Dennis Midwood. He’s now landlord at The Travellers Rest at Meltham and delivering fliers around the Drakes League to advertise his food and drink. He is also organising a 10-day Beer Fest from August 19 to 28, where the aim is to sink 1,000 pints, to help raise money for Meltham Church Clock Tower, which is in urgent need of repairs. So go up there, enjoy a pint and do your bit to help the church!

Heavy duty

WHILE no Drakes League team is involved, it’s worth noting the 130th Heavy Woollen Cup final will be played at Bennett Lane tomorrow (noon) when Hanging Heaton host New Farnley. It’s £3 adults, £1.50 concessions.

Secret hat trick

I AM indebted to David France of ADR Travel, the former Broad Oak player whose son Adam plays at Scholes, for pointing out that John Keeling’s three wickets for the Oak Seconds against Armitage Bridge last Saturday were, in fact, a hat trick. They came from the final ball of one over and first two of the next, and none of the players realised it was a hat trick until they got off the field and the scorer told them!

What a scrap

ALL eyes are on the bottom half of the Drakes Premiership today. Why? Marsden v Scholes, Shelley v Holmfirth and Skelmanthorpe v Barkisland. Need I say more?
