HALIFAX cricketer Alex Lees is making a real impact having battled his way into the Yorkshire first team.
The 20-year-old was included in the Tykes 12-man squad for the County Championship top-flight match starting against Surrey at Headingley today with the endorsements of his skipper Andrew Gale and head coach Jason Gillespie giving him every reason to be confident.
Lees scored his maiden Championship century for Yorkshire at Lord’s against Middlesex last week and Gale said: “Overall there is a great coolness and calmness about Alex’s play.
“He’s got a sound technique and he’s taken his first-team opportunity and grabbed it with both hands.”
Yorkshire coach Gillespie confirmed Lees is in line for an extended run with the first team.
“Alex was afforded an opportunity early in the season, but missed out, but it is testament to his approach that he went back and scored heavily for the second team,” said Gillespie.
“He has a really determined look in his eyes and it is pleasing to see a lad who works so hard at his game.
“And it’s a real credit to our coaches that these lads are coming through.”
