Once again we are faced with a situation where FIFA have shown complete incompetence over the World Cup.

This week the 2022 Qatar competition has now been proposed as a winter event.

For those who were up against Qatar in the bidding, including England, this has to be a real slap in the face as the goalposts have once again been moved.

What we are left with in Qatar is a competition that has no resemblance to the package that was initially offered.

It will be interesting to see if the new proposal sits with all the brands who will be backing the World Cup in 2022.

And also Sepp Blatter is facing a fight with a number of other candidates for the position of president and it will be fascinating to see if there is a change at the top whether the winter idea sits comfortably with the new man should Blatter lose the vote.

UEFA initially seem to be ready to comply with the change but the power base in Europe lies with the clubs and it will be interesting to see how the people behind Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich feel about the change in format.

Certainly when it comes to the Premier League Richard Scudamore is not showing an inclination to get behind the event.

Having played in the Far East it is hard for most people to comprehend what the heat can be like and even when the sun has gone down the humidity can be energy sapping and there is a need to be constantly taking on water.

However, the issue would appear to be still up in the air at the moment and it will be interesting to see who calls the shots.

Town’s midweek win against Reading was a big bonus for the club and they have tellingly opened up a gap between themselves and the relegation places in the Championship.

Having been beaten by Reading in the FA Cup, it was a great result for Town.

But it is amazing how a cup run can change things, particularly for sides outside the Premier League, and you have to feel that Reading and Blackburn Rovers’ focus will have shifted with the possibility of an FA Cup final being just one game away.
