England have got the expectation levels just right for the World Cup, and I’m delighted with the preparation.

People forget that for the last World Cup in South Africa, because we were drawn in such a weak group, we went in as firm favourites to get through and pundits were working out who we were going to play in the semi-finals before a ball had been kicked.

That was just ridiculous, and there doesn’t seem to have been any of that nonsense this time around.

Great credit has to go to Roy Hodgson, Ray Lewington and Gary Neville for getting the balance right.

They are positive and enthusiastic, but realistic as well.

I have enjoyed watching the friendlies because it seems they are now getting the blend of experience and youth just about spot on.

You can always look for negatives, and his injury was worrying, but it was great seeing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for an hour the other night, running past Ecuador’s defenders.

It was also great to see Ross Barkley trying things which we haven’t seen and England player trying since Gazza was wearing the Three Lions in his pomp.

He might give the ball away on occasions, but it is just nice to see that confidence from a young England player.

I wouldn’t be too critical of Raheem Sterling, either, even though it was a silly tackle to go into which led to him being sent-off, because it’s clear there is a real determination among the youngsters and a hunger to try and get in the World Cup starting XI.

I think that’s brilliant and it makes me quite excited about the tournament coming up.

While the travelling and the heat are difficult for the England players, I think draws in the opening two matches against Italy and Uruguay will serve us well.

I certainly think we need to make sure we don’t lose against Italy in the heat and humidity of Manaus, or end up chasing the game, and I’m sure Italy will feel exactly the same way.

Bookmakers have England at 12/1 to draw the first two games and I don’t think that’s a bad bet.

Next week, I will tell you who I think will win the World Cup and, sadly, I don’t think it will be England.

But I do think we will come out of this tournament believing in the future of the England team.
