Ashley Flynn started the countdown to Christmas by bagging his 50th goal of the season for AFC Emley.

Could the free-scoring striker from Huddersfield have set a new Northern Counties East League record by December 25?

There seems little doubt that Flynn, 26, will better Kieran Debrouwer’s 56 goals for Heanor Town in 2013-14.

He has three matches, starting at home to Shirebrook Town in Division I on Saturday, to do it before Christmas Day.

Debrouwer scored 43 of his record-breaking haul in league games.

Former Lepton Highlanders player Flynn has hit 37 in Division I and 13 in other competitions.

The latest came in Emley’s NCEL League Cup third-round win at Bottesford Town on Wednesday.

Tom Brennan and Jordan Coduri also scored in the 3-2 victory.

Emley were two up, through Flynn and Brennan, before the Scunthorpe side pulled level.

Club development product Coduri clinched victory in the 78th minute.

Shirebrook are eighth in the NCEL First Division and fifth-placed Emley are seeking a double against them after a 2-1 win in October.
