Bay Athletic’s Brighton Mugadza grabbed the goal which kept the West Riding County Amateur League title race alive.

Now Golcar United, beaten 1-0 by their Huddersfield rivals when a point would have clinched the championship, must play a nervous waiting game.

While Golcar, who last took the title a decade ago, have finished their games, Bay still have five remaining.

And winning all of them would make them champions for the sixth time in eight seasons.

It’s a big ask – but Bay have won 18 of their 21 league games to date.

Bay’s remaining matches are at Lower Hopton on Saturday, at home to Steeton on Monday, May 4, away to Halifax Irish on Wednesday 6, at home to Storthes Hall on Saturday 9 and at home to Ovenden West Riding, the reigning champions, on Wednesday 13.

Storthes Hall, who are fifth, were beaten 7-0 by second-placed Campion on Saturday while Huddersfield YMCA, in 11th, drew 1-1 at home to Ovenden. Kieran Lenihan scored.

In Division I, Lepton Highlanders were beaten 2-1 by Bradford Horton Sports while DRAM Community drew 1-1 at home to Thornes with Lee Turner on target.

Honley clinched promotion from Division II with a 6-2 win over Bay Athletic Reserves.

Now they will aim to pip Gildersome Spurs Old Boys, who beat Golcar United Reserves 2-0, to the title.

The scoreline was slightly flattering for Honley as three of their goals came in the final 15 minutes.

Bay were the better side for the bulk of the first half and went ahead through Jordan Jaber, who skipped in from the left, evaded a couple of half challenges and shot home in the 25th minute.

Keeper Jordan Robinson denied Bay a second with a good save from Craig Burn.

After 35 minutes, Oliver Willitts was moved into a central position and made an immediate impact as he ran onto a James Cotterill through ball to guide his shot over the Bay keeper.

Honley started the second half more positively and Daniel Knutton released Ben Lindley who drove on and shot against the bar.

Willitts took up the gauntlet and after 55 minutes, took possession near the halfway line, romped forward and smashing home a cracker of a shot.

Lindley was having a great game and he got in on the action when he received a John Elliott pass, turned his maker and slotted the ball in low down.

With 25 remaining, Elliott’s slip let in Bay’s Dominic Webster, who ran clear, rounded Robinson and reduced the arrears.

The introduction of Dylan Brett gave Honley inspiration.

It was from one of his runs that the home side got a corner.

It was taken quickly and Willitts guided home a low drive to complete his hat trick.

Richard Bray then came off the bench and fired in a sizzling 40-yard effort.

Soon after another Bray shot shaved the bar, then after Lindley’s shot was parried, Sykes notched from the rebound.
