Former Huddersfield Town midfielder Dwayne Mattis will take his first steps into management with Newsome.

The District League champions are preparing to move up to the West Riding County Amateur League next season.

And they have brought in the Huddersfield-born former Republic of Ireland Under 21 international to lead the way.

Mattis came through the Town academy and made 79 appearances before joining Bury in 2004.

He later played for Barnsley, Walsall, Chesterfield and Macclesfield Town, amassing 330 appearances at club level.

“Dwayne knows one of our players and came to watch us a few times this season,” said Newsome spokesman Rob Laverick.

“We got talking, he expressed an interest in becoming manager and we’re pleased to have him on board.

“He’s a good bloke, but more importantly an experienced ex-professional who commands respect.

“We have a few strong characters in the dressing room, but I think they’ll listen to Dwayne.”

Both District League champions Newsome and runners-up Holmfirth Town are joining the County Amateur League.

It will take the Huddersfield contingent to 10 clubs, with Bay Athletic having just pipped Golcar United to the title.

Newsome will play in Division II, won this season by Honley, who had also moved up from the District.

“We have won the District League two times running, and we feel it’s the right time to make the move up,” added Laverick.

“A number of our players have been at County Amateur clubs in the past, so we feel we can compete.

“We have already done some of the required work on our ground, and there will be more ongoing.

“We will field three sides next season, so we will still have two in the District League.

“And it will also be a good test for our current reserves, who will step up to play in the District Division I.”
