Gomersal did their survival chances a power of good in the RCD League Under 13 Division One after a 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Honley.

Robbie Greenwood and Matthew Foster worked the ball out to the left several times where George Burrows and Lucas Williams sent in a series of crosses, but defenders Frank Tutt and Kayla Smith were equal to the challenge, quickly closing off the Honley attack.

The game’s only goal arrived after 20 minutes when a wickedly spinning Louis Swallow free kick bounced over the diving Honley keeper to give Gomersal the advantage.

Brendan Pitts had the chance to double Gomersal’s lead early in the second half but, having rounded the keeper, the chance was lost due to some excellent covering by Nathan Sheard and Himat Sohal.

Harrison Booth took control for Honley and he was unlucky to see a 20-yard effort fly just wide of the mark and, at the other end, Smith forced a good save from keeper Jack Newton.

Honley’s best move and best chance arrived in the closing minutes when Owen Kenworthy found space on the left to whip a cross into the danger area where Williams was just inches from heading an equaliser.
