There were some goal scoring feats to remember as Newsome, Slaithwaite United and Honley also reached the last 16 in the West Riding County knockout games.

Ashley Scott netted twice to help Slaithwaite United win their West Riding County Trophy match, but his performance was bettered by both Paul Pyke and Kyle Silkstone who completed hat tricks to ensure that their respective clubs – Newsome and Honley – also progressed.

Division I Newsome play in the West Riding County Cup and had a fairly lengthy journey to Wetherby.

They fell 2-0 behind within the first 30 minutes after conceding goals from two corners.

The first was headed in by Wetherby’s centre half Josh Buckley and the second was met by Buckley again and the ball fell for Neal to make it 2-0 – Newsome’s keeper Hadfield then pushed an effort round the post to prevent his side going three behind.

Newsome staged a fightback in the later stages of the first period with the front men of Jobarteh, Wilkinson and Pyke causing the problems and it led to two quick replies as Wilkinson laid the ball off for Pyke to score with a low shot from the edge of the box.

From the restart, Newsome quickly gained possession and Wilkinson ran onto a through ball from Anthony Haigh, rounded keeper Finney who brought him down and Pyke coolly dispatched the spot kick to get Newsome back on level terms.

Newsome’s half-time team talk concentrated on the midfield and the trio of Beckley, McMahon and Shields responded in a positive manner.

Newsome went in front as Pyke completed his hat trick when he went on a mazy run that saw him cut in from the left and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.

Wetherby responded and pushed men forward in search of an equaliser, but Newsome’s defence of Hill, Marshall, Safeer and Haigh stood firm.

Newsome were dangerous on the break and one of these ended in Haigh testing Wetherby keeper Finney, who was only able to parry the ball for Beckley to score from close range.

Newsome now have to travel to Silsden in January and a win there will earn them a place in the last eight.

Britannia Sports are still in the competition, but their match away at Brighouse OB was postponed.

Clubs in Division II play in the West Riding County FA Challenge Trophy.

Slaithwaite are fourth bottom of the division with two wins from 11 games and to give them the name of a ‘cup side’ would be accurate as after having beaten Prince of Wales (Ossett) last week, they now have won four cup matches this season – three in West Riding matches and one in Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup.

Heavy conditions made life difficult for both sides, but it didn’t stop either from attempting to play good constructive football.

Slawit had the perfect start and with barely two minutes on the clock Adam Bower and Andrew Chadwick linked up to create a chance for Ashley Beardsall to open the scoring.

Despite having the bulk of the play Slawit couldn’t add to their score and minutes before the break Prince of Wales levelled.

In the 65th minute, the District League side were back in front as a cross from Chadwick was met by the head of Chris Wilkins, but their lead was short lived as the side from Ossett came back for a second time.

With eight minutes to play, it was still 2-2 and extra time loomed but two late goals gave Slawit a 4-2 victory.

James Edwards went on a rampaging run but was upended inside the box and Ashley Scott converted the spot kick and in the final minutes he added his second from close range.

Division II outfit Honley had the longest journey of the day as they travelled to Ripon City.

With a kick-off time of 1pm and the lengthy journey, not all of Honley’s players were available due to work commitments – not the best situation for a cup match.

Honley were soon one down as a corner by the Ripon side was only partially cleared and the well struck shot gave keeper Ben Scotcher little chance.

It was almost 2-0 to Ripon but James Cotterill, playing out of his normal position was on hand to clear the ball of his own line.

Honley then gave notice to Ripon as a Danny Knutton effort struck the upright and shortly after, he combined with Kyle Silkstone who fired the ball home.

Silkstone then added his second when he “sold the Ripon defence a dummy” before placing his effort wide of the keeper from 18 yards.

It could easily have been 4-1 as twice Jamie Taylor broke the Ripon defence but he put both his efforts just wide of the far post.

Honley then gained some breathing space with a third goal as Taylor fed Silkstone who volleyed home to complete his hat trick. He almost added a fourth and fifth but both his shots hit the woodwork. The final goal of the 4-1 victory came when Knutton scored from the spot after Dylan Brett had been brought down.

Both District League sides have been drawn away in the next round. Honley have a shorter journey that last week with a tie away at Heckmondwike. Slaithwaite face a visit to Leeds side Beeston St Anthony’s.

In the Division One fixtures, Holmbridge had a narrow win 1-0 at Shepley while Berry Brow took advantage of Newsome’s cup involvement by playing their game in hand. With a 4-0 win against Heywood Irish, the Brow overtake Newsome and move to second in the table.

In Division II, the top two met and it was Holmfirth Town who ran out 2-1 winners over Shelley. They are now level on 28 points but Shelley have played two games more – Heyside beat DRAM Community by 4-1 and move above Honley.

In Division III was between leaders AFC Lindley and KKS Spartans and the latter won by 3-1 and close on Lindley with a game in hand, but they are four adrift on new leaders Aimbry.

In Division IV, it’s “as you were” as all top three, Colne Valley, 3D Dynamos and Cartworth Moor, all won.
