Honley High School’s Year 9 football team are gearing up for a national final.

They will play in the English Schools Under 14 Cup final at the Madejski Stadium in Reading on Tuesday, May 20, when the opposition are Northampton SFB.

It’s a fantastic achievement for the Honley boys, who have already won the Huddersfield Schools’, the League, Cup and 5-a-side tournament. They also won the West Yorkshire Schools’ County Cup, beating St Wilfreds 8-2 in the final.

PE Master Noel O’Connor said: “The boys have been fantastic all season, winning all their fixtures, and averaging over eight goals per game speaks for itself.

“Their commitment, team togetherness and work ethic has been a credit to them and winning all five competitions is just reward.”

Honley – who have played and won 29 games this season – and Northampton SFB are the final two out of 722 teams who entered the national knockout, which is sponsored by PlayStation.

The Honley lads will have a coaching sessionon Friday from Huddersfield Town’s Community coaches and they are looking forward to the big day.

The Honley squad has included Alex Wright, Nathan Beaumont, Johnathon Woodall, Jack Bland, Tyreke Dewar-Moodie, Adam Page, Tom Yarwood, Isaac Dyson, Cameron McGrath, James Rawlinson, Jordan Williams, George Sykes- Kenworthy, Alfie Copley, James Sunderland.

The final is part of a three-day Schools’ Cup Festival, which runs from Monday, May 19.

So far in the competition, Honley have beaten North Chadderton High 9-2, Newall Green High 9-3, Denton Community College 8-1, Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar 9-1, St Aidan’s CE High 3-1, Wilmslow High 5-2 and Childwall Sports and Science Academy 13-4.

In the quarter-finals they toppled Ecclesfield School 3-1 before knocking out Malet Lambert 4-3 in the semi-finals.

Over 5,000 spectators are expected to attend the Festival, which will feature schools from all over England contesting 15 different finals.

Students from Honley High have also been invited along to the event to support their friends and enjoy a number of activities including a PlayStation®4 gaming experience, a half-time crossbar challenge for spectators and live commentary.
