Honley FC are into the semi-finals of the West Riding FA Challenge Trophy as they edged past Kirkheaton Rovers 2-1 after extra-time in a nervy last eight encounter.

Kirkheaton started the brighter, testing Honley keeper Jordan Robinson from distance in the fifth minute, but he tipped the ball over the bar.

However, in the 25th minute the home side nudged in front with a goal from captain Daniel Knutton, who picked up the ball on the halfway line and weaved his way through Kirkheaton’s defence before chipping a shot over an on rushing keeper.

With just three minutes of the half remaining, Honley’s hard work was undone when Matt Durrans’ miss timed interception was punished with a shot past Robinson.

The tempo in the second half increased, but goal-scoring opportunities were hard to come by.

Kirkheaton posed a threat from set plays, while Honley threatened the Kirkheaton goal from distance.

However, John Elliott’s run with just 15 minutes remaining ended with him being brought down in the box to win his side a penalty. Knutton stepped up to take the spot kick, but his strike was kept out.

After 90 minutes had failed to separate the teams it took Honley boss Richard Bray changing his formation for the second half of extra time to settle the tie.

Elliott made himself a cup hero using his knee to force the ball over the line to put his side in front with just minutes left on the clock and they managed to hold on and seal their place in the semi-final, for the second year in succession, where they will face Wetherby Athletic.
