Due to the geographical nature of the footballing boundaries, only five of the teams in the District League’s Division One are eligible for the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup.

Of those, Newsome will enter their County Amateur League team and Diggle have decided not to enter.

Of the three remaining ones, Berry Brow received a bye to the second round but Britannia Sports and Heywood Irish were involved in first-round matches.

Britannia Sports had a bloodless 7-0 victory over AFC Crossleys but Heywood Irish were taken to penalties by Hunslet Club.

The Hunslet outfit are currently 11th out of 16 in the Premier Division of the West Yorkshire League and played some attractive football which produced a 1-0 half time lead.

Heywood Irish also happen to be 11th but out of 12 in the District League but they had an answer in the form of Nathan Eastwood.

The 20-year-old is in his second season having been a member of Shelley JFC.

His first season yielded 27 goals in 26 matches and already this season he has scored nine out the 10 that Heywoods have scored.

His ninth came last week in the second half, which took the game into extra time but, as there was no further goals, penalties were required.

Up stepped another hero in the form of Kev Ash, the Heywood’s keeper. He stopped Hunslet’s third and fourth penalties as all the four spot kicks that Heywood’s took were converted to set up a trip to Whitkirk for the second round.
